February 1st Heart Warrior Violet

In honor of "Heart Month" and Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) awareness, I want to share heart stories of child heart warriors & heart angels. February 1st Heart Warrior: Violet Reese Martin was born on July 10, 2012 at 12:22pm at Johns Hopkins. She weighed 6lbs15oz and was 18 1/4" long.

Here is Violet's story:
She was born to me, Danielle Leppo, and Chris Martin. She is our first and we are absolutely blessed to have. She was born with multiple heart defects that were found at my 20 week ultrasound. We were told so many different things, but did not receive a correct diagnosis until after birth.

She has incomplete Heterotaxy, a large secundum ASD (hole between the top two chambers of the heart), a large inlet VSD (hole between the bottom two chambers), a hypoplastic right pulmonary artery, a hypoplastic right lung, dextrocardia, Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (her right pulmonary arteries hook up to the wrong spot on her heart) and an interrupted inferior vena cava with azygous return (the vein returning the blood from the legs to the heart).

Surgeries to date: September 4th, 2012: PA Band and PDA ligation; spent 8 days in the PICU due to respiratory issues. Suffered left vocal cord paresis and conducted a swallow study where it was determined that she has "trace amounts of silent aspiration". Decided to move forward with a G Tube and Nissen to provide protection to the one lung she has. September 26th: Laprascopic G Tube placement with Nissen
Discharged: October 17, 2012

Since being discharged, she has gained weight and hit milestones. Her repair surgery is tentatively scheduled around her first birthday. She is an absolute joy to have in our lives!

Violet is full of spunk and character! Her CHDs will not bring her down! ♥ read more about Violet at: http://violetreesemartin.chipin.com/violet-martin
